Mengoni Grand Prix and Lou Maltese Memorial

Shot two races this weekend.  Both in Central Park, which is ‘home’ to me.  On the upside, it’s tons easier for me to get to.  Conversely, it’s larger than Prospect Park, so the riders do fewer laps, which means fewer photo ops.  Can’t have your cake and eat it too, right?

Saturday morning, 6:15am, hiding behind my camera in the rain snapping away at the pack I hear a shout, ‘TO!’  It startled the h*ll out of me.  Turns out my buddy from high school, Frank, who I haven’t seen in a decade, drove down from New Hampshire to race.  Super fun surprise.  Apparently he’d seen some of my photos on facebook and thought I might be out taking pics.  And I was, sweet!

Got to catch up with him after the race, which was nice.

Here he is, jumping off the front of the Cat 3 pack during Saturday’s Mengoni Grand Prix:

After the race, my gf and I headed down to Halter’s Cycles in NJ to buy her a bike.  It’s a bit outside of NYC…but I used to work there, and my buddy Jay owns the place, so it’s always worth the trip to see him.  After a good fitting session we got her out and on the road.

Here she is, riding in Central Park.

No rain during Sunday’s race, which was great.  But I was working on 3 hours of sleep after having been out for a friends birthday party on Saturday night, which was a bit tough.

Check out the rider in blue/orange in the middle.  Way to attack!

The final Floyd Bennett Field race is tomorrow night.  Should be some good action there.  Saturday morning is the Alpine Hill Climb.  I’m excited to shoot this as it’s the steepest ‘climb’ we have around here.  And the one that my buddy Jack and I used to train on prior to our cycling trips to France.

Sunday I’m headed to NJ to cover the final round of the Redline Time Attack at Englishtown.  I’m thinking about renting some long, 2.8 glass for the weekend.  Should come in handy, we’ll see!
